Foreword

To further research and analysis, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been providing coherent time series data on wide range of socio-economic indicators of the regional economy of India in the form of the ‘Handbook of Statistics on Indian States’ on an annual basis since 2016. It provides sub-national statistics on socio-demographics, health, state domestic product, agriculture, environment, price and wages, industry, infrastructure, banking and fiscal indicators across Indian states over various time periods ranging from 1951 to 2024.

The ninth edition of the Handbook expands the coverage to incorporate eight new State-wise tables, viz., (i) Gender Parity Index of Gross Enrolment Ratio by Level of School Education (under Social and Demographic Indicators section); (ii) Gross State Value Added (Current Prices) (under State Domestic Product section); (iii) Gross State Value Added (Constant Prices) (under State Domestic Product section); (iv) Afforestation under different schemes (under Environment section); (v) Average number of cold wave days (under Environment section); (vi) Average number of heat wave days (under Environment section); (vii) Actual Power Supply Position in terms of Peak Demand vis-à-vis Peak Met (under Infrastructure section); and (viii) Number of schools by management and availability of functional computer facility (under Infrastructure section).

This publication has been prepared in the Regional Economy Monitoring Division (REMD), Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR) under the supervision and overall guidance of Shri Anand Prakash, Adviser, DEPR. The REMD team was led by Shri Amarendra Acharya (Director) and comprised Dr. Ramesh Golait (Assistant Adviser), Smt. Pratibha Kedia (Manager), and Shri Shivam (Manager).
